17-Digit VIN Decoder

Free VIN Decoder

Decode a 17-character VIN to view vehicle specifications available through NHTSA vPIC.

Example: 1HGCM82633A004352. Letters I, O and Q are not used in standard VINs.

What the VIN decoder can show

A successful 17-digit VIN decode can return the vehicle's make, model, model year, manufacturer, body class, engine characteristics, fuel type, transmission, drive type, plant location and a range of safety-related fields. Availability varies by vehicle because the underlying information is based on manufacturer-reported data available to NHTSA.

How a 17-digit VIN is decoded

The VIN contains manufacturer and vehicle-identification information across its 17 positions. Rather than guessing from a single character, VIN Lookup Direct submits the complete VIN to NHTSA vPIC and presents the fields returned for that vehicle. For a character-by-character overview, see our 17-digit VIN guide.

What this tool does not provide

This VIN decoder does not identify a vehicle owner and is not a complete vehicle-history report. It does not promise complete accident, title, mileage, service or ownership history. See VIN decoder vs. vehicle history report for the distinction.

Where the data comes from

Vehicle specification decoding is performed through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC). Recall campaigns, when shown, are queried separately using the decoded model year, make and model.
