What the ninth VIN character does
The ninth VIN position is used as a mathematical validation character in the North American VIN system. The other characters are converted to numeric values, multiplied by position-specific weights and added together. The total is divided by 11; the remainder determines the expected ninth character. When the remainder is 10, the expected check digit is the letter X.
How this calculator validates a VIN
The calculator first checks that the input contains exactly 17 valid VIN characters and excludes I, O and Q. It then applies the transliteration and weight formula across all 17 positions, calculates the expected position-9 value and compares it with the character actually present in the VIN.
What a matching check digit proves
A match shows that the VIN is mathematically consistent with the check-digit formula. It does not prove that the physical vehicle is authentic, that the title is clean, that the VIN plate has not been altered, or that the vehicle has no accident or theft history.
