Truck VIN Lookup

Truck VIN Decoder

Decode a 17-character truck VIN and view available vehicle specifications from NHTSA vPIC.

Example: 1HGCM82633A004352. Letters I, O and Q are not used in standard VINs.

Truck information available from a VIN

Depending on the vehicle and manufacturer data, a truck VIN decode can provide make, model, model year, vehicle type, body class, engine characteristics, fuel type, drive type, transmission, cab or body information, gross vehicle weight rating and manufacturing details. The exact result depends on what the manufacturer reported and what NHTSA makes available for that VIN.

GVWR and weight information

Truck records may include Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or a weight class rather than a single measured curb weight. GVWR represents a manufacturer's maximum rated vehicle weight when loaded within its specification; it is not the same as the truck's current weight or payload. VIN Lookup Direct displays the NHTSA field when available and leaves it out when the source does not provide a useful value.

Pickup, van and commercial-vehicle differences

The fields returned can differ substantially between light-duty pickups, vans, incomplete vehicles, chassis cabs and heavier commercial vehicles. Body and cab terminology also varies by manufacturer. A truck VIN decoder should therefore present the data actually returned for the vehicle instead of assuming every truck uses the same specification set.

What a truck VIN lookup does not provide

Decoding does not identify the current owner and does not replace a title, lien, accident, maintenance or commercial vehicle-history search. It also does not establish a truck's present mechanical condition, legal load status or regulatory compliance. Those questions require records or inspections beyond the VIN's manufacturer coding.

Using the full VIN

For modern trucks, enter all 17 characters. Standard VINs omit I, O and Q. Position 10 normally provides the model-year code, while other positions identify manufacturer and vehicle attributes. See the VIN year chart or our 17-digit VIN structure guide for more detail.
